In 2007, OISS started a new tradition with the 1st annual Globie Awards. This award is given to people on our campus and in our community who have distinguished themselves by their service to international students and scholars.

The 2nd Annual Globie Awards Luncheon, held at the LaSalle Club, was attended by over 150 people—all of whom were honored for the role they play in welcoming international students and scholars to MSU. From this esteemed group, OISS selected 4 people for the Globie Award.

Dr. Eunice Foster, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs and Director of the Institute of Agricultural Technology in the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources, has served at MSU since August of 1982. She first joined the MSU faculty in the Department of Crop & Soil Sciences as the first woman and is still the only African American member of the faculty. Dr. Foster interacts with international students and scholars from many parts of the world and has worked closely with graduate students from Botswana, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Rwanda.

Zeynep Altinsel, ITA Coordinator at the MSU Teaching Assistant Program, has taught at MSU for the last 16 years. She currently teaches International TA English Speaking classes and coordinates the TEAM pronunciation program and the ITA-Undergraduate Buddy Program. While working primarily with international TAs, Zeynep also interacts with a large number of American undergraduate students who help support Teaching Assistants in culture and language programs at MSU.

Chandos McCoy, Manager at the Owen Graduate Center and Van Hoosen Apartments, has held several positions in the Housing and Food Services Department at MSU since 1978. Over the years, he has designed and implemented a variety of educational initiatives for on-campus residents. At McDonel Hall, Chandos created the International Language and Culture Floor, which brings domestic and international students together as roommates and floormates. This highly personal environment enables students to learn about global issues, gain cross-cultural communication skills, and share their unique perspectives with each other. When Chandos became aware that international students who arrived on campus early were encountering problems with short term housing, he set up a planning team within Owen Hall, sent out communication to notify OISS of a new housing opportunity, and personally made several airport pick-ups to ensure that new students had a warm welcome on their first night in East Lansing.

Lillian Kumata, excerpt from Peter Briggs's presentation:
This is one of the great honors in my career. Today we get to recognize someone who has been generously volunteering her time to benefit MSU’s international community over a lifetime of service to others. John Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” Lillian Kumata is the best kind of bridge builder I’ve ever known. She has brought to our community an amazing and untiring commitment to bridging cultures on a person to person basis. She has a unique ability to inspire and pull others into her projects. When interviewing people for this award, the most consistent comment was this: “Who can say no to Lillian?” So, with her vision and her personal outreach, more people are pulled into MSU’s international activities and we are all the beneficiaries of it.We are all indebted and fortunate to know Lillian. As one CVIP leader stated it, “If Lillian had not been around, we’d have had to invent her.” We admire you, respect you and love you for all you have given. We must think of Lillian with Emerson’s quote: “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Thanks so much for all you have brought to MSU’s international community.
