HEALTH CARE & HEALTH INSURANCE IN THE UNITED STATES
Health Insurance Options for F-2 or J-2 Family Members
• J-2 family members are required by law to carry health insurance at all times.
• MSU recommends in the strongest possible terms that all F-2 visa holders carry health insurance at all times in order to avoid danger to their physical health and financial well-being.
3 Ways to Insure Family Members:
1. Purchase “dependent” health insurance policies for your family members through MSU. (See further information below)
2. Purchase health insurance in your home country that will cover your family members in the United States.
3. Purchase private health insurance for your family members in the United States. See the web link below for more information on how to buy health insurance in the US.
If you have a spouse who may become pregnant while in the US, please click here to obtain more information on having a baby in the US.
MSU offers health insurance coverage to international family members through the Chickering Group, Inc. For more information on MSU’s Chickering Group policy, visit the following website: http://www.hr.msu.edu/HRsite/Benefits/Students/HealthCov
Please Note: The Chickering Group health insurance policy has a $100,000 medical coverage maximum for family members of graduate students with qualifying assistantships and a $50,000 medical coverage maximum for family members of undergraduate students and graduate students without assistantships. This will not completely cover you if you experience a major illness or injury! The cost to treat major medical events such as severe illness (example: cancer) or severe injury (example: automobile accident) may exceed the normal limits of the Chickering policy.
It is possible for you to buy the Chickering Group’s “Catastrophic Plan”, which offers the same policy with a $250,000 medical coverage maximum. If you use the Chickering Group policy, we encourage you to consider purchasing this plan to protect against catastrophic financial loss in the event of a major illness or injury.
