HEALTH CARE & HEALTH INSURANCE IN THE UNITED STATES

Health Insurance Policy Requirements

All F-1 students, J-1 students, J-1 scholars, and J-2 dependents are required to carry a health insurance policy meeting the following minimum coverage levels:

• $50,000USD per sickness
• $50,000USD per accident
• $10,000USD for medical evacuation1
• $7,500USD for repatriation2
• Maximum $500 deductible
• Include inpatient and outpatient coverage for sickness and accidents
• Worldwide coverage

F-1 and J-1 students who wish to use a health insurance policy from a company other than the Chickering Group may request a waiver of the mandatory policy at the following website: http://www.hr.msu.edu/studentinswaiver/

J-1 scholars and J-2 dependents are required by law to always be covered by an insurance policy which meets the above requirements.

: Medical evacuation is coverage for transportation of the insured person back to the home country as recommended by the attending physician for medical reasons.
2: Repatriation is coverage for transportation of the insured person’s remains back to the home country in the event of death.
